Research & Development
With a combined experience of over 100 years, our technical design team have worked on projects such as:
- The design of soft body armour systems to defeat ballistic, knife and
spike threats to the requirements of UK HOSDB, American NIJ,
German, Swiss and other world standards.
- Armour systems for the protection of staff at fixed installations such
as Banks, Building Societies, Airports, cash handling facilities and
- UK MoD vehicle projects including: Saxon, Warrior, FV 430 series,
Trojan, Marine armour systems for Navel vessels and civil vehicle
projects including armoured cars, SUV’s vans, lorries and others.
- Advanced hard armour systems for marine and aircraft use,
including armoured helicopter crash worthy seat buckets, light
weight gun shields, and lightweight fighting vehicle hatches.
- The design and manufacture of ceramic armour plates for police
and military use, including the supply of MoD Iniba upgrade ceramic

Armour & Garment Design
Aegis recognises and understands the rigorous demands and
expectations placed upon body armour when used in the field and is committed to providing the most appropriate solutions to meet the client’s demands.
The ergonomic considerations, some of which are operator fatigue, heat stress and simple physical burden, are well understood by the Aegis design team and every effort is taken in the selection of materials and garment design to address all of these negative influences. Dependent upon the specific role of the product, Aegis is able to offer a wide choice of outer fabric materials and associated trims suited to promoting the well being of the user. The research behind the selection of fabric types and finishes is able to offer the end user a wide range of additional benefits, as inherent features, to improve the wear-ability of the product.
In addition to many of the “standard third party” finishes that are available, Aegis has developed and “registered” a significant number of special fabrics including anti-bacterial and anti-microbial finishes which complement the more usually requested options of fire retardant and combustible liquid shedding finishes. Some of these latest special fabric treatments utilise Nano-technology, some which are based on silver ion technology, that help to significantly reduce and control the effects of body odour.
Also available are ultra-violet repelling agents, which help to reduce thermal build up within the garment and others to aid the dispersion of water and dirt giving rise to a product that stays cleaner and fresher for longer in harsh environments. Many of these advanced fabrics and finishes are available for client selection across the full spectrum of Aegis body armour outer covers.
From the initial expression of interest by a perspective client, Aegis is able to react quickly from an extensive range of field proven solutions; is able to design to client’s specification or is able to engage with the client and follow a collaborative design approach to yield a bespoke and role-customised solution.
Aegis is also able to offer extensive knowledge and experience regarding user sizing and fitting of garments, and is able to offer a range of measuring and fitting solutions from one-offs to full force equipment roll outs. Aegis considers the supply of body armour on a through life, cradle-to-grave basis, as opposed to a one off sale.
Aegis has developed strong relationships with many of its clients, such that armour systems are routinely returned to Aegis for inspection and “mid-life” review thus permitting the client a clearer picture as to the projected whole life of the armours systems deployed in the field.
Taking into consideration the demands placed on clients as a result of the current financial climate, Aegis has recently embarked upon a re-work and re-life strategy applicable to some of its armour systems. As a result of this process the life of armours can be confidently extended thus permitting the client to benefit from several years more use from an armour system at a significantly reduced 'real cost'.
Aegis Engineering is also an upper tier registered waste recycler, broker and dealer and routinely recovers life expired body armour systems for hygienic and safe disposal. Clients are assured that armour treated in this way have their constituent materials re-used in an environmentally sensitive manner and also benefit from the confidence that the armour are thus removed from potential
misappropriation by undesirable parties.
